Avignon
The MRC Avignon, gateway to New-Brunswick, is bordered to the north by the MRC de La Matapédia, to the east by the MRC de Bonaventure, and to the west by the MRC de La Mitis. It includes eleven municipalities, namely, L'Ascension de Patapédia, Saint-François d'Assise, Saint-Alexis de Matapédia, Saint-André de Restigouche, part of what is called the plateaus; Matapédia, Restigouche Sud-Est, Pointe-à-la-Croix, Escuminac, Nouvelle, Carleton-sur-Mer, Maria. It has on its territory two unorganized territories (TNO) and two Mi’gmaq communities; Listuguj to the west of the MRC and Gesgapegiag to the east. The size of the MRC is 3,443.88 km2.
The territory offers both a forest character with its mountains, plateaus and rivers and a maritime character with Chaleur Bay.
Avignon is home to no less than four majestic salmon rivers: the Patapédia, the Matapédia, the Restigouche and the Nouvelle River. It is home to the Miguasha National Park, an exceptional natural site, UNESCO World Heritage. In the park, fossil fish and plants tell the story of the origin of the first vertebrates on earth, 380 million years ago. The famous Chaleur Bay begins in Avignon, runs along the red cliffs of Miguasha to Gesgagapegiag and offers a magnificent panorama with Heron Island in New-Brunswick.
